I've always loved real world, slightly
futuristic games such as Deus Ex and the Fallout series, so on reading
the background story to New Legends, I knew I just had to take a look at
this disk.
You are Sun Soo, a soldier in one
of last areas of China in the near future preparing for an immanent attack
from a particularly nasty emperor and his half demon henchmen. By the time
you take over as the hero, the army of evil are right on your doorstep
and congregating around your largest city in your province. After a patrol
calls in, identifying the threat, you and a couple of units head out to
assist the recon team.
Graphically New Legends looks unspectacular,
though only because just about every game realeased on the XBox these days
are so visually impressive. I found fighting a little awkward and repetitive,
but a very engrossing storyline convinced me to plug on.
Being of more first-person preference,
I tend to feel third person alternatives need a sterling use of camera
work to keep everything from becoming crowded and often confusing. Sadly
New Legends had problems here too. I loved the vast arsenal of guns, but
trying to aim them in third person was tricky. Just turning my man and
slashing didn't do much for me and while levels are really big, sometimes
I found myself running around looking for something to do.
In the end, New Legends is a limited
hack and slash with a some menial thinking involed. Its not all bad though,
what perhaps saves it is the strong storyline, which probably makes this
game worth a look, but I'd cetainly try before you buy.
